Jamaican reggae has always been about more than a rhythm. At its heart are stories of love, spirituality, perseverance, social consciousness and the cultural identity of a people. For singer, songwriter and producer Ras-I, these themes are not simply musical choices. They are part of a journey shaped by Jamaica’s rich recording history and the enduring influence of the musicians who came before him.
Born Immanuel Kerr in Kingston, Jamaica, Ras-I has steadily established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary roots reggae. With his blend of traditional Jamaican sounds, soul and modern Afro-Caribbean influences, he is building a career that honours reggae’s foundations while introducing its message to a new generation of listeners.

Ras-I’s connection to music began early. His mother, Lorna Wainwright, worked as a studio manager at Tuff Gong Studios, the iconic recording facility associated with Bob Marley and the Marley family. This gave him an unusual opportunity to experience Jamaica’s music industry from close range while growing up.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Ras-I recalled being around recording sessions involving established artists, including Gregory Isaacs, Dean Fraser, Stephen Marley, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley, Capleton and Sizzla. He also recalled witnessing Lauryn Hill record during the sessions connected with Chant Down Babylon, the project that reimagined Bob Marley’s music through collaborations with hip-hop artists.
Experiences like these offered more than a front-row seat to music history. They exposed him to the discipline of recording, the importance of musical arrangement and the different ways artists could interpret Jamaica’s sound.
It is a significant part of his story. Ras-I did not have to discover reggae entirely from a distance; he grew up close to the environment in which some of its influential music was being created.
That early exposure would become an important foundation for his own artistic identity.

Ras-I’s music draws inspiration from reggae pioneers such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, The Abyssinians, Brigadier Jerry and U-Roy. His influences also extend beyond reggae to soul and rhythm and blues artists, including Smokey Robinson and Teddy Pendergrass.
Another important aspect of his development is his versatility. Ras-I is not only a vocalist and lyricist; he also writes, arranges, produces and plays instruments, including guitar, keyboards and percussion.
This broader involvement in the creative process gives him greater control over how his musical ideas reach the listener.
His approach reflects an important principle in Jamaican music: an artist can embrace new influences without losing sight of the cultural and philosophical traditions that give the music its identity.
Ras-I’s recorded career took a significant step forward with the release of his debut album, Tsojourna, in 2019.
He followed it with Kingman, which helped introduce a wider audience to his musical range. The project included songs such as “Kingman Ting”, “Somewhere Wonderful”, “If You Don’t Mind” and “Lock It Down”, demonstrating his ability to move between uplifting reggae, romantic themes and more reflective songwriting.
One of the defining songs from this period was “Somewhere Wonderful”. Its impact extended beyond the reggae audience when the track was selected as the soundtrack for the Jamaica Tourist Board’s 2025 Easter campaign, which promoted Jamaica in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The song also won Song of the Year at the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association’s 2023 Honour Awards.

These milestones helped establish Ras-I as an artist whose work could connect with audiences both within Jamaica and internationally.
On May 15, 2026, Ras-I released his third studio album, Heart of Love, through a collaboration involving Ineffable Records and Koastal Kings.
The 13-track project explores love in several dimensions, including romantic, spiritual, ancestral, communal and self-reflective love. Rather than treating love as a subject limited to romantic relationships, the album approaches it as a force that can shape personal growth, strengthen relationships and connect people to a greater sense of purpose.
The album features collaborations with Kabaka Pyramid, Govana, Khalia and Nesta, bringing together different voices and perspectives within contemporary Jamaican music.
Songs such as “Reggae Mountain”, “Home” featuring Khalia, “Oya” featuring Govana and “Forever and Always” offer listeners different entry points into the album’s emotional and musical landscape.
The album also reflects a broader question facing contemporary reggae artists: how can the genre evolve without losing the qualities that made it meaningful in the first place?
For Ras-I, the answer appears to lie in combining familiar roots-reggae values with fresh production, varied collaborations and stories that remain relevant to everyday life.
Ras-I’s career has continued to gather recognition as his music reaches new audiences.
In 2023, he won JaRIA’s Song of the Year award for “Somewhere Wonderful”. The following year, he received the Best New Reggae Artist award at the Caribbean Music Awards. He was subsequently nominated for the Reggae Impact Award at the 2025 edition.
His live performances have taken him to established Jamaican events such as Reggae Sumfest, Rebel Salute, Reggae Sunsplash, Lost In Time Festival and Tosh Fest.
Internationally, his appearances have included City Splash and SXSW London in the United Kingdom, Reggae Geel in Belgium, Ruhr Reggae Summer in Germany and Moonsplash in Anguilla. These performances have placed him within a wider network of reggae artists and international music audiences.
Such opportunities matter because reggae’s future depends partly on its ability to remain culturally grounded while finding new listeners across different countries and generations.
The next major chapter in Ras-I’s journey arrives on December 5, 2026, with the inaugural Kingman Live: The Heart of Love Experience.
Announced in October 2026, the concert is designed to bring the music of Heart of Love to a live audience while connecting the project with Ras-I’s earlier Kingman era.
The event is being presented in partnership with Niche Entertainment and Red Stripe. Organisers have indicated that the full performance line-up is expected to be announced in mid-November.
The concert represents an important step for an artist whose career has developed through recordings, festival appearances and an expanding international presence. It also provides an opportunity to present the themes of Heart of Love in a setting where musical performance and audience participation become part of the same experience.
For fans, the event offers a chance to experience the new material alongside the songs that helped establish Ras-I’s reputation.

Reggae has survived and evolved through generations of artists who understand that preserving a musical tradition does not mean reproducing the past indefinitely.
Ras-I represents one part of that continuing evolution. His early exposure to Jamaica’s recording culture, his respect for roots-reggae pioneers, his versatility as a musician and his growing international performance history all contribute to a career that bridges tradition and contemporary expression.
His music also reinforces an enduring characteristic of roots reggae: its ability to communicate ideas about love, responsibility, spirituality and human connection without losing its rhythmic appeal.
As younger audiences discover reggae through streaming platforms, festivals and international collaborations, artists such as Ras-I have an opportunity to introduce the genre’s deeper cultural foundations alongside its sound.
His journey is still unfolding, and Heart of Love marks a significant stage in that development. With Kingman Live approaching, the coming months will offer another opportunity to see how his music translates from recorded work into a shared live experience.
For reggae fans, the larger story is not simply about the rise of one artist. It is about how Jamaica’s musical heritage continues to find new voices, new audiences and new ways to tell stories that remain meaningful across generations.
What do you think about Ras-I’s approach to modern roots reggae? Has Heart of Love helped introduce a fresh perspective to the genre, or do you prefer his earlier Kingman sound?
